Discover how our minds have changed and explore the Invention of Mental Health in this Victorian Heritage experience
Delve into the history of the Fielding Johnson building, from its origins in 1837 as the county lunatic asylum we travel back in time to experience some of the bizarre ideas of Victorian England, the era that invented ‘mental health.’
The Time Travel Treatment room is a light hearted educational look at how our minds have changed towards diagnosis and cure, with a live recreation examination room from an era of high moral concern, industrial progress, grandeur, shock, spectacle and change.
Selected specimens will be taken from the crowd and placed under the lens of enquiry, with Bartholomew Thomas Henry Mithenthorpe Ophthalmic Surgeon and Nurse Helen Earth Brennan as they test out their devices and beliefs about the brain. Be warned, blood levels will be repressed, your mind may be reset and any evil spirits you have may be removed!
